Fishing Contract Services (commercial)
Diane Frost
2024 UPDATE
My involvement in the Seafood Industry is now a small role comprising some administrative and quota management work only.
In 2008 I began studies and retrained as a social worker. I worked part time practicing social work alongside the fishing industry from 2011. I did continue having my primary work focus in the fishing industry until 2017 and at this time made the decision to switch the roles around and devote my time and energies to the child focused area of social service. This industry like fishing is both challenging and confronting – I have now been working fulltime in this field as a registered social worker since 2017.
However, it has been interesting to see the amount of changes that have been implemented in the industry over the last 7 to 8 years. New ways of having to work for all that seemed far off in a proposal format are now here and a daily reality.
Donna Wells, with her vast knowledge and understanding across the sector, has always been a constant and unwavering support for myself and many others that are in the industry, whether they have a small or large part to play.
About Diane Frost:
I have worked in the field of quota management and associated administration roles in the commercial fishing industry for over 20 years.
My knowledge of commercial fishing has been gained by a previous shared ownership of small inshore vessels. In recent years I have worked for small privately owned companies based in both Nelson and Greymouth.
Working in a range of different fisheries such as:-
- Orange Roughy (both inside and outside of EEZ)
- Alfonsino
- Hoki
- Albacore
- Ling
- Methods of fishing administered:-
- Trawl
- Setnetting
- Trolling
- Longlining
- Dredging
- Pair Trawling
I understand that commercial fishing is a challenging and physically demanding industry. It can be difficult for the owner operator who is often the Skipper of the vessel to find the necessary time for completion of MPI administration and associated tasks.
Maintaining a robust method of compliance and compliance checks throughout the fishing process from prior to the vessel sailing each trip – to the fish being received at the Licenced Fish Receiver stage.
Services:
- MPI returns
- Monthly harvest returns
- Fishplan management
- Individual species management each trip
- Trip by trip analysis
- Quota and non quota species management
- Documentation checking
- Compliance benchmarking
- Checks for unloading to LFR
- Dealing with MPI and Fishserve queries
- Project work
